Segmental vitiligo is a common type of vitiligo, which occurs more frequently in children and teenagers. Unlike generalized vitiligo that spreads randomly all over the body, this type of white patches grows along the distribution of cutaneous nerves, with obvious regular features. Recognizing its typical symptoms early helps patients seek standardized treatment in time and effectively control the expansion of lesions.
The most representative feature of segmental vitiligo is that the leukoplakia distributes along one side of the body, following the path of local nerve segments. It usually appears on one half of the face, neck, limbs or trunk, rarely crossing the midline of the human body. For example, white patches only cover the left cheek or the right arm, without spreading to the symmetric part on the other side. The overall layout presents a strip or band shape.
In the initial onset period of segmental vitiligo, the white spots expand rapidly within several months. Many patients notice that the area of leukoplakia becomes larger continuously in a short time. After about 1 to 2 years, the development trend will slow down significantly, and the white patches will hardly spread any more. This feature is quite different from non-segmental vitiligo, which may relapse and expand for many years.
Hair discoloration is an obvious signal of segmental vitiligo. Melanin loss not only happens to skin, but also affects hair follicles in the lesion area.Patients may find white hair, white eyelashes or white eyebrows growing inside the white patches at the early stage of illness. Once the hair turns pale, it means the melanocytes in hair follicles have been severely damaged, requiring long-term systematic conditioning.
The edge between white patches and normal skin is relatively distinct. The skin inside the leukoplakia is smooth, without peeling, redness, itching or pain in most cases. A small number of patients may feel slight itching when the white spots are just emerging. There is no scab or protrusion on the surface of the affected skin.
Most segmental vitiligo only invades one nerve segment of the body. Few patients will have lesions on two or more separate nerve areas at the same time. The quantity of white patches is limited at the beginning, but they can connect into large pieces along the nerve direction as the disease develops.
Segmental vitiligo responds well to early intervention. Our hospital formulates exclusive TCM solutions for this condition, combining oral herbal decoctions for internal regulation and external herbal ointments for local skin care. Timely standardized treatment can effectively restrain the spread of white spots and promote skin pigment recovery.
